What is Truth? Leadership and Christian Integrity – Fr Daniel Dries Evensong Sermon The Feast of Christ the King - Solemn Evensong (Sunday 24 November, 6:30pm) - This sermon explores the themes of leadership, truth, and discipleship, drawing on the examples of Winston Churchill, Pontius Pilate, and Jesus Christ. Churchill, a complex figure, is remembered both as a wartime hero and a controversial leader. History’s judgment of him varies depending on perspective, much like Pontius Pilate, who is vilified by many Christians yet venerated by some Orthodox traditions for his hesitance in condemning Jesus. Pilate’s tenure as Roman governor was marked by poor decisions and political blunders, prioritizing survival over integrity. His infamous question to Jesus, “What is truth?” underscores the tension between truth and political expediency. In John’s Gospel, Pilate’s interrogation of Jesus highlights a stark contrast: Pilate, consumed by fear and survival, versus Jesus, steadfast in truth, justice, and integrity. Jesus refuses to compromise, standing as the true King whose kingdom rejects corruption and power struggles. The feast of Christ the King was established to challenge secularism and totalitarianism, opposing figures like Mussolini and Hitler who disregarded truth. This sermon invites reflection on what we seek in leadership and calls for recommitment to Christ’s example of compassionate, truthful, and just discipleship. Following Christ means rejecting worldly power and embracing citizenship in the kingdom of heaven. - Reading 1: John 18:33-38 Reading 2: 1 Samuel 8:4-22 - To download a service sheet, please go to: https://ccsl.org.au/service-sheet To support the ministry of CCSL, please go to: https://ccsl.org.au/support#donations-and-bequest Report any livestream technical difficulties by texting +61 400 550 088 or emailing livestream@ccsl.org.au - Subscribe to CCSL https://www.youtube.com/@ChristChurchStLaurence Follow CCSL on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/christchurchstlaurence/ Follow CCSL on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ChristChurchStLaurence/ -
