The apostles wanted to be near Jesus, naturally longing to stay close to their teacher and Lord. But Jesus used that moment to teach about true leadership—not the kind that asserts authority like earthly rulers, but one rooted in humility and service. Christian leadership means washing feet, speaking truth with love, and serving others selflessly. We remember a great 20th-century bishop and Patriarch of Russia, chosen during a time of revolution and hardship. Of the three candidates—wisest, strictest, and kindest—it was the kindest who was elected. His leadership, shaped by early years in places like North America, was defined by compassion, foresight, and unwavering faith, even under persecution. This bishop saw that the Church must serve people as they are not idealised forms but real individuals in front of us. Leadership, in any form, is a call to serve. We are all called to lead in some way; at home, in the Church, or in daily life.
